RUNNING BACK ROOM PREDICTIONS- Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren, Cordarrelle Patterson
The Pittsburgh Steelers could very well have the best running game in 2024. The Steelers made a bold move with their number one running back as well as signing a big name. While the line-up might seem to look the same, this backfield could look a lot more different. With a new rushing offense coming to town, could we see the beginning of something great in Pittsburgh?
The Steelers kept Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren for the 2024 season. Harris was due for his fifth-year option in 2024, but it was denied. Meaning that the former first-round pick will be a 2025 free agent unless extended. Which would be a huge loss for the Steelers as Harris has been the team’s leading rusher since he has been there. The Steelers’ reason for declining the fifth-year option was due to uncertainty about Harris’ play in the new offense. If you may not know, the Steelers brought in Arthur Smith to be the team’s new offensive coordinator. Which means a new offensive system and scheme. So, while Harris has been productive the past three seasons, there is a possibility that he will not perform as well in the Arthur Smith offense. For all parties involved, the best possible outcome would be to have Najee perform at a prominent level in the new offense. And with that, Harris would receive a new deal with the team.
Najee Harris is the clear number one back in the offense. While Jaylen Warren has the potential and skills to be a starter, it just does not seem likely with what is at stake with Harris’ future. Warren will be the co-starter in the backfield. The running back room will be mostly split between Warren and Harris. But do not forget about the veteran that the Steelers signed who is already comfortable in the Arthur Smith offense. That man’s name is Cordarrelle Patterson. The 4x All-pro returner spent three seasons in Atlanta with Arthur Smith as the head coach. Now, Patterson’s key role will most likely be a returner, but with his versatility to play receiver and running back. Do not be shocked to see him on some formations.
Even though the decision of not resigning Harris was interesting, it does give both parties a reason to look forward to the upcoming season. Because if Najee looks good in the new offense, the Steelers get their franchise back and Harris gets paid with a new contract. It is a win-win situation. The Steelers have a very quick and versatile running back in their hands already. Jaylen Warren is a great second option back who has the writing for a breakout year if Harris disappoints in the new offense. Overall, the Steelers rushing game should continue to grow stronger and be the center of the offense. With the additions of Arthur Smith and Cordarrelle Patterson. As well as Najee Harris having that chip on his shoulder.
