The Pittsburgh Steelers have had arguably the best 2024 draft. The Steelers had a total of 7 picks in this year’s draft. They are acquiring three offensive linemen, one wide receiver, one linebacker, one defensive back, and one defensive lineman. So, let us look at all these picks and see what the Steelers have in store for these young stars.
MASON McCORMICK (OG) B+
Mason McCormick was a monster among men at South Dakota State. Earning 2 First-Team FCS nods. McCormick is an unmovable object in the running game whose athleticism is unmatched by anyone his size. McCormick has started every game at left guard for South Dakota since 2021. This all helped him get drafted by the Steelers in the 4th round. The Steelers’ starting left guard heading into 2024 is former Eagle Isaac Seumalo. The 8-season veteran will be 30 years old going into the 2024 season and has two more years left on his contract with the Steelers. Seumalo could mentor the 4th round pick. Unless McCormick shows out in training camp, the Steelers will have him sit on the bench until Seumalo’s contract runs up. But do not forget his name, as the Steelers could draw up some plays using his freakish athleticism in Arthur Smith’s scheme.
THE GOOD:
McCormick was given a 93% athleticism score by the NFL. He has the build of a bowling ball, standing 6’4′ and weighing 309 pounds. He can move people around on the second level, and he is also a great on-screen plays. McCormick is also a 3x caption at South Dakota State and brings a lot of experience starting. The Steelers’ new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, is highly creative when it comes to running the football. While it seems that Mason will not start anytime soon, it is very possible the Steelers will use his best qualities on gadget plays.
THE BAD:
Having that huge stature, McCormick’s frame limits his flexibility at times. Making it hard for him to block against quick pass-rush moves. His hand placement could also be quicker in some moments. South Dakota State does not face the greatest competition unlike top schools such as Alabama, Georgia, and LSU, so it is hard to judge how someone like McCormick will perform against NFL starters.
