The Steelers are commonly known for being underappreciated when it comes to record predictions. The Steelers are always put under .500 and end up proving all the analysts wrong. While the team has not had playoff success in recent years, the Steelers always manage to do better than many think. The main reason for this is due to players playing better than they were supposed to. This seems like a no-brainer, but it is true. Minor players becoming stars are quite common in the Steelers system. However, these players still get underappreciated by football fans. So, here are some possible players who could reach that next step and become true playmakers for the Steelers.
MILES KILEBREW (Safety) – Miles Killebrew was resigned by the Steelers this offseason to a two-year contract. Resigning Killebrew was one of the biggest needs for the Steelers in 2024. Killebrew was the star of the special teams since 2021. He has not missed a single game in his Steelers career and has recorded three blocked punts, which is most by any player and tied for the most by any team. Despite playing safety, Killebrew is definitely a much better player on special teams. Killebrew went to his first Pro-bowl and was even on the All-pro list for special teamers. While contributing on special teams, Killebrew has still not gotton the respect he deserves. After getting resigned this offseason, Miles Killebrew is going to continue to be the league’s best special teamers and will be underrated.
JAMES DANIELS (Guard) – James Daniels came into the league at the age of 21. But quickly made his name known in the Bears’ organization. Daniels was praised for his ability to play all positions in the interior of the offensive line. Having strarted games at left guard, center, and right guard, Daniels was a big name in the 2022 offseason. The Steelers would eventually sign the former Bear to a three-year deal. Daniels has been the starting right guard for the Steelers since signing with the team and is the projected starter for the 2024 season. Despite being only 26 years old, Daniels is going into his seventh season as a pro. The Steelers have made it clear that even though he has been the team’s starter since joining, Daniels will not be receiving an extension. James Daniels is a solid offensive lineman who can be a starter for multiple teams. Daniels is a possible breakout contender as he needs to solidify his name as a good offensive lineman if he wants to continue to be a starter in the league.
NAJEE HARRIS (Running back) – The Steelers declined Najee Harris’ fifth-year option this offseason and is a projected free agent in 2025. While being one of the only players in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in their first three seasons, Harris is not considered to be a good running back which is mind blowing. Putting up considerable numbers with sub-poor offensive line play has defined Harris’ play throughout his career with the team. The reason for the Steelers declining Harris’ fifth-year option was due to the signing of new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith. The Steelers were hesitant to give Najee Harris an extension without seeing his production in the new offensive scheme. Going into training camp, Harris has slimmed down and seemed more focused on getting better. Harris and the Steelers could very well get an extension done before the 2025 free agency if he thrives in the new offense. While being known in the league already, Harris is underrated and deserves more recognition.
KEEANU BENTON (Nose Tackle) – Benton will be proven to be one of the league’s best defensive linemen after 2024. The Wisconsin student was an underrated stud in the Steelers defense and played great in Cameron Heyward’s absence. Recording a sack and two forced fumbles, Benton was one of the best rookie defensive linemen. Benton was highly praised by NFL legend, Brian Baldinger. Benton’s best game in week 16 when he received an 89.8 grade, per Pro Football Focus. With his impressive hands and big stature, Keeanu Benton was a force in both the run game and pass rush. Benton is also in a great situation to develop with a great leader and mentor in Cameron Heyward. Heyward’s presence helped Benton’s production in many ways. And with a year of experience added to his belt, the ceiling for the young man is only getting higher.
